With the passage of time, Shell Cordovan leather also engulfs itself in a rich patina, that cannot be found on ordinary leather products. Shell cordovan is vegetable tanned using naturalisation from tree bark, chestnuts and leaves.Cordovan is an equine leather made from the fibrous flat muscle (or shell) beneath the hide on the rump of the horse. The leather derives its name from the city of Cordoba, Spain, where it was first practised by the Visigoths in the seventh century. More recently it has been increasingly used for shoes, wallets, and watch straps due to its aesthetic qualities and exceptional durability. Shell cordovan has a unique non-creasing characteristic. Why is shell cordovan so expensive? Shell Cordovan is the most durable and long-lasting type of leather. Only a small portion of the horsehide can be used and it cant be split into layers like cow leather. Tanning alone takes 6 months and a great deal of handwork; very few tanners have the knowledge to tan it. The process and time consumed to create Shell Cordovan leather make it the rare and far superior to ordinary cowhide leather. It is considered as one of the top and most durable leather items. Our wallets are unique, beautiful and durable leather goods. The edges of the product are treated with beeswax and special composition using the traditional technique, adding long-lasting durability and making your leather accessory looking beautiful and complete. All our bespoke leather goods are made by classical technology using the same techniques that were used by masters for many years. Sent with Australia Post Standard Small Box/Satchel.
Overview of Leather and Types. Full Grain Leather (we only use full-grain leather).
This is the top layer of the hide, found just below the fur. This is where the grain is the tightest, making it the strongest, most durable part of the hide. This portion of the hide resists moister very well and over time develops a stunning natural cluster from use. This leather is similar to Full Grain leather. The difference is that is it not quite as strong and has been sanded and buffed, removing a few millimetres off the top to reduce any scratches or imperfects from the surface. This gives the leather a more uniform look with less of the scars and scratches that occur naturally. Often there is a finish coat added which reducing the leather breath-ability but has a greater resistance to stains. This is the portion that remains after the top is split off for the higher grades. The grains are not nearly as tight in this leather. Often artificial grain and patterns are applied to its surface, being treated with stains or dyes to get the desired finish. This is the lowest quality leather you can get. It is not stripped from the hide but bonded (glued) pieces of dust and shavings pressed together.
Essentially it is leftover bits and scraps stuck together then resurfaced to create something similar to vinyl.
